a sense of home

“A sense of home” arose from an opportunity to delve into the Anthony Shaw Collection at COCA, York. Shaw has been collecting sculptural and painterly ceramics, for over 40 years and his collection is on long term loan to York Museums Trust. The individual works were beautiful, tactile and inspiring, but what struck me was the domestic setting for the collection and the stores and archives that I was able to visit. The piles and shelves of crates and boxes, were reminiscent of the storeroom at the back of my dad’s shop where boxes were piled high, gathering dust. So I started making boxes, all be it adaptions with loose sides and tops, stitched together. Keeping stuff, storing memories, trying not to let it out or collapse around us. The essence of a collection, held together by the threads of time.
